As someone who has attended and participated in quite a few workshops,
I have been pleasantly surprised at the amazing pool of experiences
and knowledge that I came across at this one. Everyone has been eager
to share and to learn, and as a result the environment was extremely
conducive to new ideas. I can honestly say that I have learnt much
more at this conference than all the other workshops/seminars/training
sessions I have ever attended put together! The most important lesson
for me has been that it is important, as a workshop facilitator, to go
with the flow of ideas. At a few of the sessions, all the previous
planning (those charts and exercises very painstakingly drawn) went
for a complete toss as the session was taken into a somewhat different
direction through the eagerness, enthusiasm and the fresh ideas of the
participants. "Be flexible" is the new mantra for me as far as
facilitating workshops is concerned!
On a lighter note, I have really enjoyed the easy camraderie at the
conference centre and the hotel where some of the participants were
staying. I have made several friends with whom I would like to remain
in touch once I leave the country. One particular highlight of the
past week was the 'cultural evening' where I was teased by many about
not wearing a Sari. I was also prodded into a few dance moves by
well-meaning friends who were unaware that I can't dance to save my
life! I am sure my blotched attempts at dancing were hilarious for
them and provided a welcome relief to the more serious atmosphere at
the conference.
